Re-imagining theological education for cultivating just communities
Welcome to The Black Mountain School of Theology & Community
Founded in 2019 as a community-centered educational institution, we seek to strengthen civic institutions and foster systemic change for justice and the promotion of higher goods. Our aim is to counter systems of oppression and alienation through practices of co-learning and co-action grounded in action research principles, organizing tools, and theological reflection to advance local communities in the pursuit of the common good.
We are a dynamic and diverse team of organizers, scholars, and faith leaders committed to re-locating theological education within the needs, assets, and longings of local communities and congregations.
Whether you engage us through tailored classes for community & faith leaders, a hosted think-tank/incubator, weekend training “studios”, or extended (12-24 months) cohort-based trainings for congregations & organizations, our educational and training programs are committed to collaborative learning based in providing practical tools of social engagement and are crafted in a pedagogy and ethic of liberative action.
In our short history, we have trained approximately 50 diverse congregations from Mobile, AL to Ellison Bay, WI in vital tools that serve to thicken the relational fabric within congregations and thin the boundaries between congregations and their communities. Common results include congregations becoming better “located” and embedded in the needs, assets, and knowledges of their local communities while also developing collaborative tools to confront unjust systems and build better alternatives in their contexts.
